# Year 1 – Squirrel

Welcome to Year 1, this year finds us starting the National Curriculum.

Suddenly we are very busy with Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Art, D&T, Music, RE and PE.

We follow the letters and sounds approach for phonics and use Oxford Reading Tree Scheme for Reading.

• ## Planting beans

In our Science learning this half term, we are learning about plants. We had a go at planting our own beans and over the next few weeks we will look after them and watch them grow.

• ## Moving pictures

In DT, we have been creating moving pictures. This week, we created a moving picture with a lever using a split pin. We linked it with our History learning about transport.

• ## Cuisenaire rods

This week, we have been using the Cuisenaire rods to make numbers between 11 and 20. We investigated different ways we could make each number.

• ## Superheroes

This week we have been writing about ourselves as superheroes. First we thought of a superhero name and then drew and labelled what we would look like. Here are some examples from Eden, Tom, Radia and Sanjana!

• ## Writing instructions

This week, in English we have been writing instructions. We wrote some instructions and then went into the hall and worked with a partner to give our instructions.

• ## Barnaby Bear’s birthday

We celebrated by singing Happy Birthday and having a teddy bear pic nic. We enjoyed a yummy biscuit!

• ## Winter poems

In DT, we have been designing and making playground equipment. We thought about how we could make it move and what objects were best to use.

We have been writing poems, here are some examples of our Winter poems by Anna, Oscar and Aiza.

• ## Elvis the Elf is back

We have been using our tens frames in Maths to group objects.
Elvis the Elf arrived back in school!

• ## Artists

This week in computing, we have been recreating the work of Wassily Kandinsky using iPads. We have learnt which tools are better to use. We have also been practicing our Christmas songs ready for the Christmas play!

• ## Piet Mondrian inspiration

In Computing, we learnt about the artist Piet Mondrian. He uses line, shape and colour to create his art. We used the iPads to create our own versions.
