Design & Technology

Intent

At Parkgate Infants and Nursery school we want the Design and Technology Curriculum to be inspiring and practical. We provide our children with the opportunity to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. Our curriculum gives the children the experience to acquire the subject knowledge, skills and understanding required to be successful in Design and Technology. We want to prepare them and give them the opportunities and experiences that they need to be successful in a technological world.

The Design and Technology curriculum is planned so that learning is revisited enabling the learning to be embedded into our children’s long-term memory. Progression is also a key part of the curriculum, for example in the early years foundation stage children experiment with construction materials to make creations move, in year 1 children investigate making moving pictures using levers and sliders and children in year 2 progress to looking at wheels and axles to make their own models move.

Design and Technology also has strong links with other curriculum areas especially science, maths, and geography where concepts are revisited and expanded.

The curriculum also links strongly to our curriculum drivers. Making healthy choices is covered through The Teddy bears picnic and making pizzas aspect of the curriculum. We also cover Local and Global Parkgate through local visits to the park and linking our vehicles to Pakistan. Throughout the curriculum we help our children become Effective Communicators by talking about and presenting their designs and evaluations. We also show the children that ‘Anything is possible’ by preparing them for jobs in design and technology.
